You can click here to find all our Romantic Picks, in one place! This week’s Romantic Pick comes from the web drama on everyone’s watchlist: “Once Upon A Small Town”. Starring Red Velvet’s Joy, Choo YoungWoo, and Baek SungChul in the leading roles, “Once Upon A Small Town” tells the story of a city boy, Han JiYul (Choo YoungWoo), who moves to the countryside to take care of his grandfather’s veterinarian clinic in his stead. There he meets his childhood friend Ahn JaYoung (Joy), but he doesn’t seem to remember her. However, JaYoung remembers the time they spent together all too well. Now, as adults, they forge a new relationship all over again. Spoiler Alert! In episode 4 of “Once Upon A Small Town”, the village people gather one evening to have a party. JaYoung, JiYul, and SangHyun attend, and while JaYoung is friendly towards both of the men, there’s clearly tension between them, especially with SangHyun’s newfound knowledge of the fact that JiYul is JaYoung’s cherished secret friend from her childhood. Feeling competitive, JiYul and SangHyun constantly try to one-up each other. From meat to alcohol, they keep asserting their machismo. JiYul is vegetarian, presumably because he is a vet, so SangHyun takes the chance to show off how well he can eat meat, gaining praise from the elders. Then, when Miss Jang (Baek JiWon) brings out her special bush clover liquor in celebration, JiYul refuses a glass, but SangHyun takes it up, adding that JiYul made a good call since it is rather strong. Catching the taunt in his tone, JiYul asks for a glass too, explaining that he got curious about the effects of the liquor since JaYoung said it is supposed to be good for men. They end up having an unspoken drinking contest, and after a song by JaYoung, JiYul decides to leave. Unexpectedly, JaYoung follows suit, leaving a restless SangHyun behind. On the way, the two have a sweet yet awkward conversation, followed by a little stumbling that leads to accidental hand-holding. Classic K-Drama! However, their moment is interrupted by the glare of a flashlight coming from none other than SangHyun. He reveals that he had come to check on JaYoung because he felt uneasy leaving her alone with a man who “was curious about the effects of the liquor” since men are all the same. JiYul, being as nonchalant and cool as ever, says that he will leave JaYoung with him then but only because it is like leaving her with a female friend. This riles up SangHyun beyond belief, and he blurts out that he too, is like any other man. He openly declares that he wants to hold and hug JaYoung when he sees her. Then comes the confession. SangHyun looks JaYoung right in the eye and tells her that he likes her and that she shouldn’t feel too comfortable around him. End scene. Now, this might not have been the most ideal and romantic confession, but SangHyun’s sincerity, urgency, and desperation are palpable. He is anxious about losing JaYoung to JiYul and can’t be bothered to make a big deal out of expressing his feelings for her. So, he grabs the first chance to confess, even if it is in the middle of nowhere. The fact that he does it in front of JiYul is also significant, almost as if he is telling him to back off. The love triangle is almost at its peak, and we cannot wait to see what happens next! Are you watching “Once Upon A Small Town”? What was your favourite scene so far?
